Heat Exhaustion in Dogs (Identification and Prevention)

!±8± Heat Exhaustion in Dogs (Identification and Prevention)

Summers always brings to mind things like vacations, picnics, boating on lakes and rivers, and children playing in the sun and swimming in the pool or at beaches. Many times the family dog is right there with them totally engaged in the activities. There is fun to be had for sure but there is also a lurking danger. Heat exhaustion!

Dogs love to get caught up with us in our summer fun. They live for these social activities and your companionship. Many times though they get so caught up that they surpass their own bodies ability to cool off and go into distress from heat exhaustion. At this time their bodies overheat past their capacity to cool themselves by panting. If this is let go unattended they can go from heat exhaustion to heat stroke which could be deadly. Recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion in your dog is critical to his well-being.

When a dog is suffering heat exhaustion the first thing that you will notice is his tongue hanging out of his mouth to an unusual degree. His need to try to gasp for air and cool himself will cause his lips to pull back and expose his back molars. He will start to exhibit signs of stress which may show itself in pacing, circling, laying down and then getting right back up again, or a glazed over look in his eyes that denotes panic. He is panicking because his body is telling him that his temperature is rapidly rising to a point that he cannot cool himself.

You should always have a thermometer on hand when you own a dog so that you can tell if your dog has an ailment that you should be concerned with and needs immediate action and attention. Body temperature is the best indicator of wellness or distress in your dog. Normal temperature for a dog depending on age and outside temperature can range from 101 to 103 with the extreme ends being a bit high or a bit low depending on outside temperature and the stress that the dog is under at the time. A dog who's temperature rises above these levels should be considered to be in danger and immediate action and veterinary care are called for.

In the case of heat exhaustion the dogs temperature could go up quickly to over 104 to 105. This signals the danger of heat stroke which could be fatal. Before loading the dog into a potentially hot car and speeding off to the veterinarian immediate action should be taken. This involves getting the dog cooled down quickly while at the same time not shocking the dogs system. This is best done by putting cool water on his belly (not his back) which is where his vital organs are located. Get an ice pack or a zip lock bag with ice in it and apply it to his belly. Get him into the coolest spot you can find (air-conditioned room or if outside under a shade tree) and begin to work on getting his temperature down. You will know this is happening when his tongue begins to slide back into his mouth a little as he breathes. When a dog has heat exhaustion he often will throw up his food. This is the bodies attempt to rid him of any extra baggage that will limit the body from cooling. Do not give him water right away as he will probably throw this up also.
Wait until he starts to stabilize and then offer him a short cool drink.

If you need to rush him to the veterinarian make sure that the car is cooled down prior to putting him inside.
A dog who is stabilizing could be put back into distress when loaded into a hot vehicle. Make sure that someone rides with him who can apply the ice pack to his belly in route to the hospital. This may not be necessary unless you cannot manage to bring his temperature down by the aforementioned methods. You don't want to further shock the dogs system by throwing him into a cold pool or lake. You can walk him in to where his belly is cooled but do not throw him in as this could create shock that could cause a heart attack or further stress.

Whether or not your dog is prone to heat exhaustion has everything to do with his individual body makeup. Some dogs like people are better at cooling themselves than others. This could be due to body type, coat color, coat type, or being overweight, or due to physical malady. Paying attention to your dogs' individual makeup is very important.

Ideas for keeping your dog cool and safe in the summer are many:

1. Provide adequate availability of cool fresh water that is kept in shaded areas.
2. Provide plenty of shade. Shade can be provided by overhead covers, trees, pop ups, solid fencing etc.
3. Provide a child's pool with water in a shaded area for him to lay in.
4. Never leave him in a hot car or contained area where he cannot get to shade. Do not expect a crate or a dog house to provide shade. These enclosures can actually hold heat if left in the sun5.
5. If the dog must work in the heat there are cooling pads, vests, and collars available on the market.
6. Always keep a thermometer on hand to take the dogs temperature if necessary.
7. Make sure you have ice packs in the freezer in case of emergency.
8. If the area the dog is in is too hot for you it is too hot for your dog!
9. If your dog is not allowed in the house at least crate train him so that you can bring him into an air conditioned laundry room or other room of the house out of the heat.
10. There are a number of items available to help cool yourself and your dog on the market. These include fans and mister systems that are easily installed and maintained.
11. Consider reversing your dog's schedule in the summer. If he is crated at night during the winter, consider crating him during the day in the air conditioning in the summer and leaving him out at night.
12. Most important to the safety of the dog be AWARE of his condition and activity in the summer months.

Some of the recommendations above will seem like common sense to some people. It is important to note that although this SHOULD be true, it is often not the case. We have had clients pull up in the summer and leave dogs in a hot car. When called on it they will often say "he's a dog, he can handle it." Just to have us come down on them to their amazement. They are amazed that we are bold enough to tell them to get the dog out of the hot car and we are amazed that they don't know better. I'm not just talking about any old client, I'm talking about professional people who should know better.

If I could make one recommendation to dog owners it would be to have a simple store bought digital thermometer. This is the best indicator to you as to whether you actually have an emergency or you are over reacting. This is true for heat exhaustion as well as many other possible maladies or virus situations. This one device could make the difference between life or death for your beloved canine companion.

Power Outage Survival Kit

!±8± Power Outage Survival Kit

When it's black out it is definitely black out. I often think why it is that whenever I happen to lose power it occurs on the darkest of nights with no moonlight what-so-ever? Well all that shows is the necessity of having a well equipped power outage Survival kit.

As usual your power outage kit must be ready to deploy with you should the need arise therefore I have found it best to assemble my kit within a backpack of some sort. Hanging your kit on a door hook behind the kitchen door or a close by bedroom door is a smart trick and assures that it is readily available in the dark should it be needed.

Items which I always consider keeping in the kit would include:

1. A battery operated or hand cranked radio complete with extra batteries.

2. A Clock which operates on battery power. I have combined both the hand cranked radio and a clock in one unit I have purchased however sometimes the clock loses its time when the battery is weak so I highly advise keeping a battery clock handy.

3. Now this next item is very important. Keep a non cordless telephone in your power outage bag to connect directly to the telephone line. Portable telephones will not function when you have no power available. I also maintain a cell phone however needless to say the numbers are different so I try to maintain both on hand for emergencies.

4. You can never have enough lanterns or flashlights along with their associated extra batteries. This is also a function of my cranking radio-clock but we try to maintain a flashlight or lantern in every room of our home. This will prevent accidental falls in the dark

5. Several 6 to 12 hour light sticks are useful for keeping in your black out kit also. They are a lot of fun also for the kids.

6. A digital quick response food thermometer is a useful addition to your kit. Perishable food temperatures should not reach above 40 degrees for more then a 2 hour period. Use this thermometer to periodically check the internal temperature of the food for harmful bacteria conditions.

7. We keep several candles available in the kit however we use them strictly in a dire emergency because of the fire hazard associated with them. Usually we prefer the battery flashlights and lanterns. A quick note on fire safety is to ensure that all your smoke and fire detectors have a battery backup.

8. If you or a family member happens to be on any sort of medical equipment ensure that you have an alternate means of power for it. I always have small portable power units that can easily be carried around. Should it require refrigeration maintain a small cooler with ice packs in it. The breakable ice packs are great for this. I also maintain a DC operated cooler for this purpose if needed. Keep extra medications in the event that pharmacies do not have back up power and are not working.

9. Generators can be useful however take appropriate precautions in regards to proper ventilation. I consider the preferred method to be having your generator outside and connecting it to an indoor power receptacle specifically for the generator.

10. Keep paper products available as well as a manual can opener.

11. Store up on one gallon of water per person along with a supply of paper cups. A neat little trick is to store several containers of clean water in your freezer. In case you lose power to help to keep your food cold and as it melts you can use it as drinking water.

12. You should also consider an alternate cooking source such as a BBQ grill or a small propane camping stove. I keep both available.

13. Should heat be necessary always maintain extra means of heat such as blankets, fireplace or heat source. We generally keep extra blankets readily available as well as a kerosene heater for use if the main heating system fails to operate due to the lack of electricity.

That about wraps it up. You can conclude your pack with several personal items that you and your family members consider essential. Keep in mind if you have a Bug out vehicle that is equipped with people items for emergencies you could easily move to it temporarily. Campers and motor homes are especially useful in emergency black outs.

The Best Types of Electric Smokers in the Market

!±8± The Best Types of Electric Smokers in the Market

Smoking is a process of cooking food by applying steam, usually from burning wood. Meat and fish are the two most common foods being smoked. This is healthier without the need for oil.

While maintaining the basic premise, manufacturers now introduced electric smokers. Instead of burning woods, this appliance emits steam or smoke to cook foods.

Most electric smokers have temperature controls and adjustment controls vital for cooking meat or chicken perfectly. Several electric smokers also have automatic heat generators. Some types of smokers are charcoal, wood, electric and gas.

Listed below are some types of electric smokers that are available in the market:

The Brinkmann Gourment Electric Smoker is completely painted in two colors; such as black and red. It has 1500 to 1600 watt heating elements. It has a unique thermometer and front hinged door for adding water easily.

The Old Smokey Electric Smoker has a drum shape. It is completely made from aluminum. It also comes with two water pans and a rack. It is the cheapest electric smoker. The Electric Water Smokers has a vertical electric smoker design that can attract the attention of consumers. The water pan helps control temperature and keeps the smoking process of meat or fish moist.

The Cabela's Premium Vertical Smokershas all the whistles and bells you need in order to take on your turkey or meat smoking project. It has 8mm steel assembled components, powder coated for a tougher fish. The adjustable ball bearings and two door design compression-fit door systems prevent smoke and heat loss as you add some water or chips or wood.

Cabela's Premium Vertical Smoker also features cool-touch handles, 20, 000BTU burners, chrome-plated racks and a built-in sausage hook. It whistles a bell when smoking is done. This appliance is heavy-duty, resembling a refrigerator. The food is placed inside "shelves" for smoking.

Brand : KegWorks | Rate : | Price :
Post Date : Oct 22, 2011 00:42:52 | Usually ships in 1-2 business days

Use this handy controller to regulate the temperature in your freezer between 20 - 80F . Great for turning a chest freezer into a keg refrigerator. Strictly a mechanical thermostat for cooling only, it is simple to use and economical. It operates with a gas filled probe on a 6-foot capillary tube. When the gas contracts or expands in the probe, it triggers a mechanical device inside the control which turns the power on or off. There is no probe temperature readout on the dial, so keeping a thermometer inside the refrigerator is highly recommended to keep track of the actual temperature. On most refrigerators, the controller will allow a usable range of 37 to 80 F, while on freezers, the controller will be able to reach its full 20 to 80 F range. *Keep in mind that if you use it to control a refrigerator, you will lose the use of the freezer compartment for food storage, as it will not stay cold enough for safe frozen food storage. In stock and ready to ship. Features: Made of stainless steel. Adjustable with the turn of a knob. No drilling necessary. Plug unit into wall and then run the sensor into your freezer. Grilling a Great Steak - It's Easy

!±8± Grilling a Great Steak - It's Easy

Grilling Steak - A scrumptious way to end the day

Is grilling steaks an involved task? Nah, not really. Just a few basic facts and some steak grilling tips to smooth the way and you're good to go.

The temperature of the grill, what kind of steak and how thick, spices and marinades, and whether you want the steak rare, medium rare, or medium get's you on the path of how to cook a steak. You pick up great grilling steak tips just by doing. So let's get grilling.

A hot grill warms my heart. (I use a Weber two burner gas grill under 5 at Lowes) One side all the way high, and one side a bit cooler. The hot grill is to seal the steak to keep in those valuable juices. Just as you always use steak tongs instead of a fork to turn the meat, putting fork holes in the meat will let all those juices run out and the juices are the taste.

The type of steak you are grilling will determine your temperature and seasoning choices. Filet Mignon with so little fat, although tender there is very little flavor so you have to spice it up. Ribeye, porterhouse t-bones and sirloin steaks have great ribbons of fat throughout the meat so flavor is not an issue. Don't forget some of the less expensive steaks such as flank steak, london broil, round steak, and even chuck steak. With the right care it could be a hit.

Where you get your steaks can make a difference. A butcher shop cuts to order off of fresh meat. Grocery stores have pre-frozen, prepackaged, thinner cut steaks.

A little preparation goes a long way to grill some great steaks. Make sure that the steaks you are about to grill are at room temperature. If you put cold or frozen meat on a grill it will burn the outside and leave the inside raw and icy. Get those steaks out of the freezer or refrigerator long before you cook them. Cut the surrounding fat of the steak every inch and a half. It will prevent the steak from curling because fat shrinks faster than the meat.

To season or not to season? - that is the question! Spices and seasonings are usually of the cook's choice, since various combinations are possible; yet pepper is probably among the elements that cannot miss. Tenderizing steak marinade recipes and steak rubs enhance the flavor of many cuts of beef steak. For tougher cuts of meat, choose a tenderizing steak marinade recipe with ingredients like vinegar or citrus juice mixed with a little olive oil and seasonings and soak all day in the 'fridge.

When grilling steak, most people keep turning the meat from one side to the other. Not good! That will destroy your steak. As an example, on a hot grill cook your steak 2 minutes then spin it 45 degrees and cook for another 2 minutes. Then turn it over, look at the (nice|unique|pretty] grill mark design you made, and do the same for the other side. I usually then move the steaks to a cooler portion of the grill to let it cook a little longer without charring.

Everybody seems to want their steak differently. You hear "just a little pink", or "slicing into the steak. Push on the top of the steak with your thumb- if it is soft spongy you have a rare steak, if there is a little resistence it is medium rare, and if it feels firm there ain't no pink. The amount of firmness is the trick.

If you have a sensitive thumb or are just smarter there are little digital steak thermometers that tell you by exact temperature whether your steak is the way you like it. Life just gets easier.

Enjoying friends and family while grilling some great steaks is a wonderful experience. Repeat weekly and report back on your success.

Thermistor Thermometer: Reliable Temperature Measuring Tool

!±8± Thermistor Thermometer: Reliable Temperature Measuring Tool

A Thermistor thermometer is referred to as a semi conductor device that has electrical resistance and found to be proportional to temperature. Basically the word Thermistor formed with the combination of two words named as 'resistor' and 'thermal'. These are known to be the type of resistor with electrical resistance carrying positive or negative temperature resistance which decreases by 3% per degree Celsius.

Basically there are two kinds of thermistors which are referred to as PTC means Positive Temperature Coefficient of Resistance and NTC meaning Negative Temperature Coefficient of Resistance. NTC are the forms which have inverse relation with temperature and resistance of the object which means that when there is an increase in the temperature of the object there will be a proportional decrease in the resistivity too. Simultaneously if there is a decrease in temperature the resistant level will have an increase.

Whereas the PTC are concerned they witness the same change in the temperature and resistance which means that when there is an increase in the temperature the resistance will also get increase and when there is a fall in temperature reading of the object the resistivity too will decrease.

It's Incredible Uses:

• The thermistors are widely used these days in numerous medical, applications. It is appropriately used in clinical stethoscopes or by way of probes at the time of surgery as well as in various medical units to avoid overheating in circuits, such as X-Ray and ECG machines, MRI Scanners, Blood dialysis equipment Infant incubators, etc.

• We may find their effective usage in home gadgets like cell phones, computers, amplifiers, cars, Air conditioners, Clothes dryers, Dishwashers, Electric water heaters, Fire detectors, Home weather stations, Oven temperature control, Refrigerator and freezer temperature Control, Toasters, Washing machines.

• Whereas industrial applications are concerned it has a main role to play in gadgets like Fluid flow measurement, HVAC equipment, Photographic processing equipment, Plastic laminating equipment, Water purification equipment, Welding equipment, Gas flow indicators, vending machines, Aircraft temperature, Missiles and spacecraft temperature, Satellites, etc.

Most popular model in this category is manufactured by Barnant which offers you with incredible specifications as temperature measuring range from 32 to 122°F or 0 to 50°C, large dual display, overrange, underrange, and low-battery indications, Open sensor, DT function to display the differential temperature relating to current plus assessed one, memory storage function up to 99 temperature readings, recall option, automatic or manual field calibration, Splash or shatterproof resistant and with 1/4" probe with plug connector.

Thermistor thermometer is compact, durable, reasonable and user-friendly device that can be used to measure the precise temperature of food, human being, animals, industrial gadgets, etc. These are found to be more instant and accurate as compared to the traditional or analog ones. Few steps on how to use this device:

• The first thing that you need to undertake is switch on the measuring unit.

• After that check the temperature reading status of the unit means it should be on zero level. In case it is not set it down by pressing the reset button on the device.

• Once you are done with this, hold the probe of the unit and make it to contact directly with object or subject you desire to measure. However in case of food you need to insert the probe nearly half inch deep into it and that too once you are finished with the cooking process.

• Later on wait for seconds till you hear a beep sound.

• Then remove the unit out of the measured object or subject and check the temperature reading over the display screen of the gadget.
